Teenage alcoholism is so important to recognise. It is not healthy to be getting absolutely wasted a few times a week and sometimes young adults become alcoholic without realising it. If you are unable to have a fun time without drinking or you feel like you need to drink when others are in an overwhelming way then consider getting help.
No really. Get help. It starts with parties, and then it’s “lol im just sad all the time” and before you know it everything is awful and you’re spiralling out of control. Don’t get sucked in and don’t let tumblr Depression Culture make you think it’s normal.
Just two cents but why does art have to mimic reality to be valued. Why is art valued at how “close to reality” you can get stuff down like proportions or color theory or anything. Why do we not value art that simply expresses something new and silly but instead see art as something to be approved upon until someone can look at it and go “yes, you drew that arm a lot like how a regular arm looks, therefore it’s good.” It’s so boring why can’t art with pink clouds and noodle arms and tiny eyes just exist, why is it always just seen as a stepping stone, an “in progress” style? I’m not gonna learn anatomy anymore. I’ll draw my eyes too small. I’ll give people 5 ft legs and never learn what a tree looks like. And that’s not me refusing to “get better” at art because aren’t shouldn’t have a destination or growth. We don’t mock mother nature when she makes clouds that don’t look enough like clouds, we instead look at the funny shapes in the sky she gave us. Nobody looks at a puddle and goes “that’s not the right shape”. Everybody can draw at any “stage” and someone who can draw a realistic eye and a 5 year old who draws clouds as blue popcorn outlines are all the same; artists who made a drawing, neither are ahead or behind. I’m gonna draw peaches a bit oblong now
realism is valued way too much in the art world that cartoon artists, anime, gag comics and etc aren’t seen as real art, or as worthy of praise or recognition. some people don’t think these artists even deserved to be paid for their work, since it’s not “nice enough”. it’s like if you can’t or don’t want to make something equivalent to michaelangelo’s david, your art isn’t worth anything.
i went to an art camp a couple summers in high school, and it was an esteemed and expensive camp. everyone always said great things about it, so i figured it would help me be a better artist.
but one year, in one of my classes at this camp, i was asked to make a self portrait out of pastels. i usually hate self-portraits, because i can never do a perfect realistic style like every other student could, and i hated the style anyway. i would always feel bad when i couldn’t do it and everyone else could. however, i actually figured out a way to push my cartoony style into something more accurate to my face, and ended up with a really nice piece that i felt represented how i saw myself well and looked good. now, this camp didn’t have grades, since it was just a camp for learning and everyone was there for fun. everyone’s art would be shown in an art show at the end of our stay no matter what, and some would get awards if the teachers liked their pieces particularly. there was no pressure.
but that year, i had my teacher from that class pull me aside the day before our art show, give me my self portrait, and tell me that she wasn’t going to put it in the show because it wasn’t “realistic enough”. she didn’t want to put my fucking art in my final art show because SHE DIDN’T LIKE IT. everyone’s pieces always ended up in the show no matter what because there WERE NO GRADES!! and i was just fucking furious at this teacher who had the audacity to tell me my art wasn’t good enough to be shown to my parents and other students, even though there were no grades to judge that and i was proud of it. that was the first and last time that ever happened to me, because once the art show passed (my piece was still not in), i never went back to that camp the next year. because FUCK that teacher for shaming my art, for pushing me down even though it was her fucking job to show me how to have fun with my work and make something i was proud of.
so yeah, fuck that noise. draw jagged lines, bad circles, ugly anatomy. let that fucked-up pose STAY fucked up. ignore anyone who devalues their art just because it doesn’t meet their stupid standards. art is what you make it.
I think this has something to do with humans’ need for socialization. If something is very surreal or abstract, the less it looks like something that actually exists, the more difficult it is for someone to relate to it. As long as you can tell what the subject is, it won’t be confusing or discomforting. Stylization is only effective when still seen as the original subject.
But why does art need to be relatable is a big thing? Why do we need to relate to everything we see otherwise we “other” it and see it as confusing/strange/wrong? Art doesnt need to mimic the subject perfectly or even at all if that’s how the artist wants it, it doesn’t need a purpose, and it doesn’t need to be relatable or mimicing. Stylization doesn’t need to be “effective”, whatever that means, and the art teacher at this camp was just an asshole. Self portraits are so intimate too that nobody but the artist has a say in it because how we perceive our “selves” is entirely different than how we look, and art should capture that, not “effectively mimic reality”! If I wanna draw my self portrait as a black hole with eyes and a smile then art should let me do that, cause that’s what art is about! Stylization should be fun and about expression, not understandability and “effective” mimicry.
[wakes up] [clown vanishes] aaaahhh that was a nice rest. i slept like a baby all night. time to start the day [gets up] [takes a shower and brushes teeth] [gets dressed] [goes about my day taking care of business] [comes home] fwoo i’m tired. it’s time for a hard-earned night’s rest. [lies down] [falls asleep] [evil clown materializes in my room and watches me sleep all night]
no text post has ever started better than “[wakes up] [clown vanishes]” I’m hooked into the story I want to know more about this world
Gets 3 XP for wandering into a corner of my bathroom I’ve technically never set a literal foot in before and I see the floating text ‘DISCOVERED: CHOLERA COLONY’ seemingly appear out of thin air before gently fading away
Deltarune takes place in an alternate timeline, so it doesn’t take place before or after undertale. The monsters were never driven underground. Asriel lived and grew up and went to college. Undyne has both eyes and has never met Alphys, who is more into western comics and cartoons instead of anime and manga (tho she started reading Mew Mew Kissy Cutie recently). Bratty and Catty aren’t BFFs, they hate each other. Mettaton is still a ghost. Toriel and Asgore got divorced for probably normal reasons. Gerson Boom and the Shyren are dead. Sans fucked your mom.
The last one traumatized me for the rest of my lifu ;))
